The year was 2001. Fresh off a job ending injury - armed with a stack of business cards, a giant gorilla inflatable and a lot of determination, 20 year old Mitch Belfry went door-to-door on Kennedy Road in Scarborough. There were a lot of "No." answers but he knew eventually he'd get to rent his giant King Kong to someone. What he didn't know is that his first customer would turn out to be one of his best and longest running business relationships. The store was TeleCity Electronics. The owner there rented the rooftop gorilla for 1 month. But before that month was up he called and said "This thing is working so well." He asked, "How much to keep him for 6 months?" . Balloon Boys was born - however back then they were called 'Blow Up Advertising'. The name didn't really work and Balloon Boys was the one that stuck. Fast forward a few years and many rentals later, Balloon Boys has evolved into a custom dye sublimation printing business with employees who help manufacture Canadian made custom flags, tents, table covers and all types of tension fabric products for trade shows and point of sale. Fitted with state-of-the-art Mimaki wide format dye sub printers and a Montio Antonio calandar heat press, the company is a leader in the fabric printing space.
And yes, giant rooftop advertising balloons are still a big part of the business.
